New Delhi: Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has emerged as the world’s most innovative automotive company in the Automotive INNOVATIONS Report 2026 published by Germany-based Center of Automotive Management (CAM), becoming the first Chinese automaker to secure the top position since the study was launched in 2005.
According to the report, BYD achieved an innovation index score of 157.2 points, overtaking last year’s leader Volkswagen Group, which ranked second with 143.1 points. Mercedes-Benz Group secured the third position with 134.2 points.
The ranking evaluates the innovation performance of global automotive manufacturers based on technological advancements and market-relevant developments. BYD’s leadership in the 2026 edition underscores the company’s growing influence in electric mobility, battery technology and intelligent vehicle systems.
Other automakers featured in the top 10 list include XPeng, BMW, Geely, Renault, Toyota Motor Corporation, General Motors and Hyundai Motor Company.
The achievement marks a historic milestone for China’s automotive industry, reflecting the rapid rise of its manufacturers in global innovation rankings and the increasing competitiveness of Chinese vehicle makers in international markets.
