Mumbai: Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited (MLMML) has been named among the 15 global finalists for The Earthshot Prize 2026, becoming the only Indian automotive company selected for the prestigious environmental award, the company said.

MLMML has been shortlisted under the ‘Clean Our Air’ category for its work in electric last-mile transportation. Three finalists have been selected across each of the five Earthshots, with one winner in each category set to receive a prize of £1 million.

Founded by Britain’s Prince William in 2020, The Earthshot Prize recognises and supports solutions addressing major environmental challenges.

According to MLMML, it has sold more than four lakh electric vehicles, which have collectively covered over 9 billion kilometres and helped avoid approximately 1.85 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The company said its electric three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles are being used by drivers, shopkeepers, delivery partners and small businesses, helping reduce operating costs while supporting livelihoods and micro-entrepreneurship.

MLMML has also introduced customer-support initiatives such as its UDAY NXT programme, which provides benefits including accidental insurance for drivers and financial counselling.

“Last-mile mobility can deliver environmental and social impact at scale. More than 4 lakh Mahindra electric vehicles on the road today are helping power 4 lakh livelihoods every day,” Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO, Auto & Farm Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said.

He said the recognition reflected a model where cleaner mobility, customer prosperity and scale can work together.

Suman Mishra, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited, said the impact of electric mobility was visible in the lives of drivers and entrepreneurs who depend on the vehicles for their income.

“When electric becomes the better economic choice for the customer, cleaner mobility can grow much faster,” she said.

The company said the transition to electric three-wheelers in India has also drawn international attention, with The Sunday Times of the UK reporting from Lucknow on how electric autorickshaws are changing the economics of daily mobility for drivers while reducing local emissions.

Prince William described Mahindra’s work as “a practical solution that is already working at scale and changing the way people move around their cities”, according to the company.

Other finalists in the 2026 cohort include Ørsted, Mahila Housing Trust, AirQo, Satellites on Fire, Pula, the City of Barcelona, Bhutan, Indigenous Desert Alliance, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance, Niue Ocean Wide Trust, PFAS-Free France, South Korea Zero Waste Movement Network and Mother Earth Foundation.
