Bengaluru: Swedish commercial vehicle maker Volvo Trucks on Tuesday launched the Volvo FMX Edge, an off-road dump truck developed for mining operations in India, as the company looks to strengthen its position in the country’s mining and heavy commercial vehicle segment.

The truck was unveiled at Volvo’s manufacturing facility in Hoskote near Bengaluru in the presence of mining customers and senior executives from Volvo Trucks, VE Commercial Vehicles and Volvo Construction Equipment.

The launch comes at a time when mining operations in India are increasingly shifting towards larger excavators, higher productivity targets and greater emphasis on safety, fuel efficiency and lifecycle performance.

The Volvo FMX Edge has been developed on the company’s existing FMX platform, which has established a presence in Indian mining operations over the last five years. According to the company, more than 3,000 Volvo FMX500 8×4 trucks are currently operating across mining sites in the country.

The newly launched truck features a 31.2 cubic metre SAE heap body capacity along with a 2.8-metre-wide body configuration aimed at improving compatibility with high-capacity excavators and increasing cycle productivity in overburden movement applications.

The company said the vehicle has been designed using customer feedback and validated under Indian mining operating conditions. Speaking at the launch, Per-Erik Lindström said India remains a key market for the Volvo Group’s future growth plans. “India is a cornerstone for Volvo Group’s future and an increasingly important market for Volvo Trucks. The launch of Volvo FMX Edge reflects our commitment to Indian customers and to solutions designed around real operating needs,” he said.

He added that the truck combines Volvo’s global expertise with requirements specific to Indian mining operations. B Srinivas said the product has been engineered around customer expectations related to productivity, uptime, efficiency and lifecycle value.

“Volvo Trucks has earned the trust of Indian mining customers over nearly three decades by delivering solutions that perform in real operating conditions. The Volvo FMX Edge is a natural evolution of this journey,” Srinivas said.

The truck also incorporates Volvo’s safety systems, vehicle stability technologies and fuel efficiency-focused engineering aimed at improving long-term operational performance, the company said.

Following the launch, the company organised an application-led demonstration session at the Volvo CE Customer Centre Ground, jointly hosted by Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Trucks, showcasing integrated mining productivity solutions.

India continues to remain an important market for the Volvo Group’s commercial vehicle and construction equipment businesses as mining activity and infrastructure investments expand across the country.
