Ahmedabad: Electric mobility startup MATTER has crossed 100 granted patents with over 400 filings across electric vehicle technologies, marking a significant milestone in India’s two-wheeler EV segment.
The company said the achievement places it among the most innovation-driven startups in the sector, reflecting a strong focus on in-house engineering and intellectual property-led growth.
Founded with the aim of building electric mobility solutions tailored for Indian conditions, MATTER has worked on key challenges such as thermal safety in extreme climates, rider control in electric drivetrains and energy efficiency for daily commuting. From early prototypes to its geared electric motorcycle AERA, the firm has evolved into a full-stack mobility player integrating mechanical engineering, power electronics and software systems.
Unlike several EV startups, MATTER said its patented technologies are already deployed in vehicles on the road, delivering performance, reliability and lower ownership costs.
According to the company, AERA riders logged over 21 lakh kilometres across 1.37 lakh rides in 2025, operating in diverse weather conditions ranging from 3 degrees Celsius to 48 degrees Celsius. The usage also generated more than 56 lakh gear shifts, creating data inputs to further refine drivetrain performance, thermal management and energy optimisation.
The motorcycle has demonstrated a top speed of 124 kmph and can accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in 4.2 seconds, while achieving lean angles of up to 59 degrees. Riders have reported journeys of up to 182 km on a single ride, with in-house hypermiling reaching 226 km, the company said, adding that users can save up to ₹65,000 annually on running costs.
MATTER said its patent portfolio spans motors, thermal systems, battery management, transmission engineering and AI-driven vehicle control, with a high conversion rate from filings to grants indicating strong technical depth.
The company’s geared electric powertrain aims to retain rider engagement while improving efficiency, a segment it claims remains relatively underexplored in the industry.
Commenting on the milestone, MATTER CEO Mohal Lalbhai said surpassing 100 granted patents demonstrates India’s potential to lead in original EV innovation.
“We are not adapting existing platforms, but building technology that redefines how electric motorcycles perform, feel, and deliver value to riders,” he said.
Chief Technology Officer Kumar Prasad Telikapalli said the patents translate into real-world products and highlighted a strong pipeline of intellectual property as the company continues to expand its technology base.
MATTER has also received national recognition, including the ‘Best Patents Portfolio in the Start-up Category’ award from the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2024.
The milestone reflects a broader shift in India’s EV ecosystem toward deep-tech innovation, as companies move beyond assembly-led models to develop indigenous technologies for the next phase of mobility.
