Mumbai: Tata Motors Limited, one of India’s leading automotive manufacturers, announced its sales performance for May 2025, reporting total sales of 70,187 units in the domestic and international markets. This marks a decline of approximately 9% compared to the 76,766 units sold in May 2024.
The company experienced a year-on-year (YoY) dip in both its commercial and passenger vehicle segments. Total commercial vehicle (CV) sales for the month stood at 28,147 units, a 5% decline compared to 29,691 units in May last year. Similarly, passenger vehicle (PV) sales totaled 42,040 units, down 11% from 47,075 units in the corresponding month of the previous year.
In terms of domestic performance, Tata Motors recorded total domestic sales of 67,429 units, a 10% decrease from 75,173 units in May 2024.
The commercial vehicles segment, which forms a significant portion of Tata Motors’ portfolio, showed a mixed performance across sub-categories. The domestic sales of CVs stood at 25,872 units, reflecting a 9% drop from 28,476 units last year. Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) truck sales were down 10%, with 7,106 units sold in May 2025 compared to 7,924 units in May 2024. On the other hand, the Intermediate, Light & Medium Commercial Vehicle (ILMCV) segment recorded positive growth, with 4,954 units sold, up 11% from 4,478 units a year earlier.
Passenger carriers remained stable with 4,748 units sold—almost identical to the 4,737 units sold in May 2024. However, Small Commercial Vehicles (SCVs), cargo and pickups saw a notable 20% decline, with sales dropping from 11,337 units to 9,064 units.
In the international business (IB) segment, commercial vehicle sales showed strong growth, rising 87% to 2,275 units from 1,215 units in the previous year. Despite this increase, it was not enough to offset the overall decline in the total CV segment.
Tata Motors’ Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (MH&ICV) segment, which includes both trucks and buses, also reported a marginal decline in domestic sales. A total of 12,406 MH&ICV units were sold domestically in May 2025, compared to 12,987 units in May 2024. However, when including international business, the total MH&ICV sales reached 13,614 units, showing a slight increase from 13,532 units sold in May 2024.
On the passenger vehicle front, domestic PV sales (including electric vehicles) stood at 41,557 units, representing an 11% drop from 46,697 units in May 2024. Passenger vehicle sales in international markets fared better, rising by 28% from 378 units last year to 483 units in May 2025.
Electric vehicle (EV) sales, which include both domestic and international volumes, showed modest growth. Tata Motors reported total EV sales of 5,685 units in May 2025, up by 2% compared to 5,558 units in the same month the previous year. These figures include sales from Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, both subsidiaries of Tata Motors Limited.
Despite the overall decline in monthly sales figures, Tata Motors continues to focus on strengthening its portfolio and expanding its presence across markets. The moderate growth in international CV and PV sales, as well as in the EV segment, signals underlying resilience amidst a challenging macroeconomic environment.
